Supervised Consumption Services

In May 2017, Alberta Health Service submitted an application to the federal government, proposing to provide supervised consumption services at the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre. Formal letters of support have been received from the Calgary Chief of Police, Mayor Naheed Nenshi, Beltline Neighbourhoods Association, and Councillor Evan Woolley.

Responding to the rising toll of opioid-related death in our city is a top priority. Supervised consumption services are a place where people can use drugs in a monitored, hygienic environment to reduce harm from substance use while offering additional services such as counselling, social work, and opioid-dependency treatment.

All residents are encouraged to participate in this consultation. To register call 1-877-275-8830 or email [email protected]

Consultation dates are as follows:

  • July 10, 5:30 – 8:30 PM.
  • July 13, 9:00 – 12:00 PM.
  • July 17, 5:00 – 8:00 PM.
  • July 19, 2:00 – 5:00 PM.

More public consultations may be added as required. Evidence shows that supervised consumption services save lives, improve health and do not increase drug use and criminal activity. The Calgary Coalition on Supervised Consumption Services received $260,000 to conduct a needs assessment and identify potential locations where additional supervised consumption services might be needed in Calgary.
