The City of Calgary is holding a public information session on the 1 Street S.W. Corridor Improvements on Monday, June 20 at Hotel Arts (119 – 12 Ave. S.W.) from 11:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to present the streetscape design, answer questions and share information about the anticipated construction schedule.

Project summary/background

This project supports the fundamental principles of Calgary’s Centre City Plan, which places a higher priority on pedestrian and transit mobility, emphasizes the creation of great streets and places for people, and aims to build liveable, inclusive and connected neighbourhoods.

In 2003, The City implemented the first phase of public realm and streetscape improvements along 1 Street S.W. between 12 and 14 Avenues, with the intent of supporting the revitalization of the area. Since that time, significant private investment has been made in this area through residential and non-residential developments.

In 2016, The City is completing the second phase of improvements to the 1 Street S.W. corridor through work on the 1 Street S.W. CPR underpass enhancement project, which was designed to benefit the nearly 10,000 pedestrians who travel though the underpass each day.

This project implements the final phase of improvements to the corridor by extending the streetscape character first established in 2003 along the full length of the corridor. It is anticipated that The City’s investment along this corridor will help with the continued revitalization of the neighbourbood by attracting private developments, new businesses and more residents to the area.
